PN Publication Wrapper Service will not start

Symptom 1

From the Services Management Console, you start the PN Publication Wrapper service and receive an error. This is an issue that can affect all versions of the Publication Server.

Resolution

Uninstall and re-install the service.

Triaster have supplied 2 convenient .cmd files to do this.
To uninstall:
  •  Drag and drop \PublicationWrapper\PublicationWrapper.exe over \PublicationWrapper\Uninstall Service.cmd
 or alternatively
  • From a command prompt type: "ROOT1\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\InstallUtil.exe /u ROOT2\PublicationWrapper\PublicationWrapper.exe" (where ROOT1 and ROOT2 are replaced as appropriate to the host machine).

At this stage, the service should have disappeared from the Services Management Console when you refresh its listing.

To reinstall:
  • Drag and drop \PublicationWrapper\PublicationWrapper.exe over \PublicationWrapper\Install Service.cmd
or alternatively
  • From a command prompt type: "ROOT1\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\InstallUtil.exe ROOT2\PublicationWrapper\PublicationWrapper.exe" (where ROOT1 and ROOT2 are replaced as appropriate to the host machine).
Enter the details of the User Account that the publish runs under.
 
Try to start the PN Publication Wrapper service again.
 
Symptom 2

From the Services Management Console, you start the PN Publication Wrapper service, but it closes immediately with a message, "The PN Publication Wrapper service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example the Performance logs and Alert Service."
From a Command window, when executing 'net start "PN Publication Wrapper"', you get:

The PN Publication Wrapper service is starting.
The PN Publication Wrapper service could not be started.

The service did not report an error.

Resolution 2
Clear the Application Event log.
Restart the service.
Note: The problem is thought to occur when the PN Publication Wrapper service tries to write to the Application Event log, but fails.
