When trying to open a Visio file, the following error message is displayed, and the file cannot be opened.
The problem occurs when Visio is reading Solution XML data within the file, and only when there are particular quantities of such data.
 Hotfix for Visio 2007
Microsoft has released a hotfix to address this problem, but it applies to Visio 2007, not Visio 2003.
Amend the Solution XML in the file
This applies to both Visio 2003 and Visio 2007.
Adding or removing a single character from the Solution XML data should allow the file to be opened.
  1. Open the Visio VDX file in Notepad.
  2. Go to the end of the file, which will look something like:

Note: there may be a LoadTimeProcessing node and associated data there too, but the following instructions still apply.
  3. Click in front of '<Version>', and press ENTER.

  4. Save and close the file.
  5. Try to open the file in Visio.
If there were load-times actions within the Solution XML, then opening in Visio should execute and clear them, which will change the Solution XML and should resolve the problem. However, if there weren't, then opening and saving in Visio may return the Solution XML to the state which caused the problem. In that case, return the file to a state in which it can be opened in Visio, as described above, and make a slight amendment to the file (e.g. rename an element slightly, but if so, consider the consequences for, for example, drill-down) that will change the Solution XML slightly.
Applies to:
  • All versions of Process Navigator
  • Visio 2003, Visio 2007
