Introduction

This article outlines the steps required to install the minimum system requirements for a Triaster Server on Windows Server 2008.  Please note that this is only a guide, as every company will probably have their own minimum server requirements. This describes our requirements only.

Installing Windows

Instructions for installing Windows Server 2008 can be found here.

Configuring Windows

Windows Search in Windows Server 2008 needs to be installed as a role service of the File Services server role.  The following instructions take you through installing the required components.
  1. Press Start > Administrative Tools > Server Manager.
  2. In the left-hand pane, select Roles.
  3. Within the Roles pane, click "Add Roles".

  9. Press Next.
  10. Press Install.
  11. Press Close.
  12. Run a system restart if required.

Installing Internet Information Services (IIS) and its required Role Services

  1. Press Start > Administrative Tools > Server Manager.
  2. In the left-hand pane, select Roles.
  3. Within the Roles pane, click "Add Roles".
  4. Tick "Web Server (IIS)".
  5. If a window appears asking if you want to install the required features then click "Add Required Features".

  15. Press Install.
  16. Press Close.
  17. Run a system restart if required.

Note:

·         IIS is already installed, install .NET 4
- .NET 4 should be registered with IIS automatically

·         IIS is installed after installing .NET 4
- .NET 4 will need to be registered with IIS manually

Basic Software requirements

Visio

Please refer to the minimum system requirements page to find out which versions of Visio are currently supported in Windows Server 2008.

Microsoft Silverlight

The latest version of Microsoft Silverlight can be found on the Microsoft website or can be installed through Windows Updates as an optional update.

Note: Security may prevent Silverlight from being installed directly from the website. In that case, download the installation executable, and install from that.

Triaster Services User Account

The following instructions assume a local account with administrative privileges. If access to resources on another system is required, e.g. map files are stored on a separate file server, then a domain account would be more appropriate. This account would still need to be a local administrator.
  1. Press Start > Administrative Tools > Server Manager.
  2. Select Configuration > Local Users and Groups > Users.
  3. Press 'More Actions' > New User...
  4. Enter the new account details.
  5. Untick "User must change password at next logon".
  6. Tick "Password never expires".
  7. Tick "User cannot change password".
  8. Click Create.
  9. Close the 'New User' dialog.
  10. Back in the Server Manager window, select Configuration > Local Users and Groups > Groups.
  11. Double-click Administrators.
  12. Click 'Add...'.
  13. Enter the name of your new user.
  14. Click OK.
  15. Click OK.
Further information from Microsoft can be found here, or for information on creating an Active Directory domain account, click here.

Applying Windows Updates

To apply updates:
  1. Start > Administrative Tools > Server Manager.
  2. In the 'Security Information' section, click 'Configure Updates'.
  3. Check for updates, and install, if necessary.
